On the hill immediately west of the city, Pogradec Castle marks the place where the story of Pogradec began. Archaeological evidence points to an Illyrian settlement here by the 5th century BC, chosen for its commanding position above the lake and the routes passing along its shore. Little of a conventional castle survives today: visitors encounter traces of walls, foundations, and archaeological ground rather than intact towers or rooms. The real reward is the relationship between the ancient site and its landscape. From the hill, Pogradec, the lake, the plain, and the mountains across the border can be understood in a single panorama. The climb from town is relatively short but steep, with rough and exposed sections. Wear secure footwear, take water, and visit in the cooler morning or late afternoon. Sunset is beautiful, but allow enough light for a safe descent and treat the unguarded ruins with care.
