A short drive north of Pogradec brings you to Lin, a stone-built village wrapped around a small peninsula on the lake. Its peaceful waterfront hides an extraordinary past: archaeological research has identified an approximately 8,500-year-old pile-dwelling site beneath and beside the water, considered the oldest known lakeside settlement of its kind in Europe. Follow the narrow lanes between traditional houses to the hilltop remains of Lin’s Early Christian basilica. Its remarkably preserved floor mosaics date from the 6th century and feature geometric, floral, and animal motifs, while the site opens onto one of the finest panoramas of the lake. Back in the village, small guesthouses and restaurants offer an inviting place to try local fish and enjoy the unhurried rhythm of life by the water. Lin works beautifully as a half-day trip from Pogradec, but its sunsets and quiet mornings reward a longer stay. Few places combine prehistoric archaeology, early Christian art, traditional architecture, and lakeside scenery within such a compact and walkable setting.
