Mali i Thatë forms the dramatic mountain backdrop east of Pogradec, rising between Pogradec’s lake and the Prespa basin. It belongs to the same transboundary mountain landscape as neighbouring Galičica in North Macedonia, but the two names should not be treated as interchangeable. From the higher ground, experienced hikers can be rewarded with exceptional views toward both great lakes. This is a mountain outing rather than a casual city walk. Routes vary in length and difficulty, waymarking can be limited, and the exposed limestone terrain offers little shade. Check the weather, carry sufficient water, use an offline map, and consider a local guide for unfamiliar or higher routes; border areas also require care when planning a track. For prepared visitors, Mali i Thatë reveals a wilder side of Pogradec: open ridges, broad horizons, and a striking view back toward the city and the lake. Spring and autumn often offer the most comfortable hiking conditions, while winter demands proper mountain experience and equipment.
