Rising to 2,373 metres southwest of Pogradec, Valamara is one of the highest mountains in southeastern Albania and the source area of the Shkumbin River. Its broad highland landscape of ridges, pasture, rocky ground, and small glacial lakes feels far removed from the city’s busy lakeshore. A Valamara ascent is a serious full-day mountain objective. Approaches are long, roads can be rough, trails may be lightly marked, and conditions change rapidly at altitude. Start early, check the forecast, carry navigation, water, food, sun and rain protection, and go with an experienced local guide unless you know the route well. In stable weather, the summit area offers immense views across the mountains and basins of southeastern Albania. The scale, solitude, and sense of wilderness make Valamara deeply rewarding—but it should be approached with preparation and respect, not treated as a casual excursion from Pogradec.
